This area is now home to returnees from the 20-year insurgency that caused 100% displacement here. Maternity and children are the most vulnerable in this area, a fact confirmed by Ongutoi leadership. This area suffers a 17% HIV prevelance rate-well above the national average of 6.5% and the global average of 6.1%.
High Adventure accepted the challenge to provide facilities for Ongutoi with special emphasis on maternity, children and AIDS care, utilizing international and Ugandan government accepted and environmentally friendly construction methods that include compressed earth blocks, solar power, and water harvesting, storage with filtration.
A plan of 16 buildings (10 outpatient wards, 2 AIDS care and 4 staff houses) was created and construction began in 2010. To date, 4 outpatient buildings (24 beds) have been complete. An operating theater and one AIDS care building are planned for construction in mid 2011.
Since each building also serves as a water collector, it is vital that more structures are provided to help increase water redundancy for the 5-month dry seasons. Each 2 buildings afford 30,000 liter collection into secure in-ground cisterns.
